Stephanie Studer, a PhD candidate at McMaster University, is inviting caregivers and family members of autistic individuals with high support needs to participate in their research study entitled The Lived Experiences of Caregivers of Autistic Individuals with High Support Needs. The study will explore the rewarding aspects of caregiving, the challenges faced by caregivers, and their opinions about Ontario government programs that support both autistic individuals and caregivers.This research is being conducted under the supervision of Dr. Ellen Badone in the Department of Anthropology at McMaster University.
Who can participate?
- A caregiver or family member of an autistic individual with high support needs (such as difficulties with eating, dressing, or communication)
- OR a therapist, counselor, teacher, or clinician providing support
- A resident of Ontario (Greater Toronto Area or Hamilton for in-person interviews; online options available across Ontario)
- Over 18 years old and fluent in English
What will you do in the study?
Participants will be scheduled for one or two one-on-one interviews (each lasting about 1 hour). These will either take place in person at a location of your choice or virtually via Zoom, depending on your preference and location. In these interviews, the researcher will ask about your experiences and how caregiving has impacted your life. As a thank you for your valuable time and insights, you will receive a $30 gift card (your choice of Shoppers Drug Mart, Starbucks, or Indigo) after completing your interviews.

All data collected will remain confidential, and no personal identifying information will be shared.
